Money does not make you happier. In the short story "The Gift of the Magi", O. Henry describes a young couple trying to buy each other Christmas gifts even though they do not have much money. I thought O. Henry was trying to show you can be happy, even without much money. A young couple loved each other so much that they were willing to give their most prized possession to get the other one a Christmas gift. Although they were not able to use their gifts they were still happy. Even though they lived in a very cheap house and lived on a short weekly budget they lived happily. The story takes place in a small town with a young and poor couple, Jim and Della. Jim was only earning 20 dollars a week, and they lived on an 8 dollar a week flat. Della was working hard to get money to buy Jim a gift but she only had 1.87$ to spend. She decided to sell her long gorgeous hair so she could buy Jim a gift. She found the perfect chain for Jim's gold watch. She goes home and Jim gives her a set of combs and she was still happy even though she sold her hair. She then gave Jim then chain only to find out he sold his watch to afford the combs. In this story felt happy inside hearing how a poor couple was very happy. It reminded me of the saying, "money doesn't buy happiness". I loved it because it makes you realize that their are so many poor couples that are probably more happy then rich couples, because they don't take things for granted. The story was a bit challenging to read just because of the big words it used. "The Gift of the Magi" is a story that everyone should read. It shows love sacrifice and poverty, and is something you would not be let down by reading.
